The Most Important Tasks method asks you to choose one to three tasks that would make the day meaningfully successful. The method becomes useful when “important” has a test: the task prevents a consequence, honors a real commitment, or creates progress that other work cannot substitute for.
Choose one primary MIT
Start with:
If only one task receives serious effort today, which result best protects or advances what matters?
That is the primary MIT.
Then add up to two supporting MITs only if the calendar can hold them. A day with three important tasks and no available time still has an honest priority problem.
Use the three importance tests

What becomes meaningfully worse if this does not move today?
a deadline is missed
another person is blocked
a health or care need is neglected
a fee or opportunity appears
tomorrow becomes much harder
Urgency alone is not enough. A notification can be urgent-looking and inconsequential.
Commitment
What did you clearly promise, and to whom?
Include commitments to yourself when they are specific: a medical appointment, class preparation, rest after illness, or an application deadline. Do not treat every casual intention as an equal promise.
Progress
Which task creates a meaningful change that routine work cannot imitate?

Progress tasks are often easy to postpone because they lack immediate external pressure.
Distinguish an outcome from a project
Too large:
launch website
get healthy
finish course
organize house
MIT-sized:
approve the homepage direction
book the medical appointment and prepare questions
complete and check practice set four
clear the dining table and create a donation box
An MIT should fit one or more identifiable work sessions. If it needs a week, choose today’s consequential checkpoint.
Put importance through the calendar
After choosing the task, find its actual window.
Ask:
How much effort does the next checkpoint need?
What fixed commitments already occupy the day?
What setup, travel, or recovery belongs around it?
Is the right energy likely to be available?
If the only open window is 30 minutes, turn a 90-minute MIT into a 30-minute checkpoint. Do not keep the large wording and hope.
A simple ranking sequence
When several tasks feel equally important:
Protect health, safety, and fixed care.
Protect deadlines with real consequences.
Unblock other people or future work.
Advance one high-value, non-urgent outcome.
Handle maintenance that prevents accumulation.
This is an Ellie heuristic, not a universal moral ranking. Your responsibilities and values determine the consequence.
Example: a student workday
Alex has:
attend two classes
work a four-hour shift
study for an exam next week
submit an assignment tonight
buy groceries
answer messages
Primary MIT:
Submit the assignment after a complete error check.
Supporting MIT:
Complete one 35-minute diagnostic exam set.
Groceries remain necessary, but Alex can buy only the essentials after work. Messages become a short batch. The calendar shows that three large academic outcomes do not fit beside class and work.
The method does not make everything happen. It makes the tradeoff visible before midnight.
Example: a low-energy day
Mina planned a presentation, errands, and household work but wakes with a migraine.
The MIT is not automatically the most ambitious item. It becomes:
Send the presentation outline and request a revised review time.
That protects the commitment while reducing the health cost. Rest can be part of an important day.
Add a “not today” line
After selecting MITs, name the work you are intentionally not prioritizing:
Not today: redesign the template, research new tools, clear all email.
This reduces covert competition. The tasks still exist, but they no longer pretend to be part of today’s promise.
Review the choice, not just completion
At the end of the day:
Was the task actually important?
Did it fit the available window?
What displaced it?
Was the checkpoint small enough?
Did an easier task borrow its time?
An unfinished MIT may indicate poor execution, but it may also reveal a bad estimate, a changed consequence, or a day with less capacity than expected.
MIT vs the 1-3-5 rule
The 1-3-5 Rule plans one large, three medium, and five small tasks. MIT planning focuses first on consequence and progress.
Combine them carefully:
1 primary MIT
up to 2 supporting outcomes
a small maintenance batch if capacity remains
Do not treat nine tasks as a minimum.
